On disaster response situations, waterborne could be the most appropriated way to supply aid to distressed population. However, the existence of vessels specifically designed to this task is scarce due to its low utilization per year.In order to reduce the ownership costs and increase vessel efficiency it was designed a vessel to operate as a commercial RORO and be ready for fast re-role and be used as disaster response vessel. With this concept of operations, the ship will be owned by the disaster response stakeholder (governmental or NGO) and the operation will be shared by a commercial operator via a charter contract. It was designed a 120m length vessel with 7685 tons of displacement, able to run RORO commercial operations and can accommodate and operate functional containers with plug-in points. These containers will "convert" the ship from a regular RORO vessel to a disaster relief vessel. With this solution the re-role would be as fast as possible. Containers will be installed providing the following capabilities: 22 beds hospital, 52 beds accommodation, fresh water generation containers with capacity to produce 1500m3/day, refrigerated cargo containers for 84te, dry cargo containers for 504te and two GENSET containers with capacity for 3200kW. All these containers will be supported by the ship auxiliary systems as well as from their integrated systems. The ship is equipped with 4 Diesel Generators with 9980 kWe total capacity and propelled by two directional pods with maximum speed of 18 knots. The estimated cost for one ship is 105M.
